Professor Ian Frazer

Professor Ian Frazer was the 2006 recipient of the prestigious "Australian of the Year" award for his research into, and development of, a vaccine to prevent the human papilloma virus (HPV) infection in women.

The vaccine is, also, expected to reduce Pap smear abnormalities, and to potentially eliminate cervical cancer within a generation. Cervical cancer affects some 500,000 women, each year.

The three stage HPV vaccination of young Australian women, aged between 16 and 26 years, has began, and will continue to be provided by the Australian government “free of charge” until July 2009.

GAIN Inc urges young women who have not yet had this important vaccination to see their doctor as soon as possible.

"I'm honoured to accept the position as patron of GAIN, and hope to be able to help the organisation in its battle against gynaecological cancer though my patronage, and through promotion of the need for further research into the causes of, and management of, gynaecological cancer."
